A Review of Girish Karnad's Nagamandala

 31.01.2026

Book Title:
Nagamandala
Author: Girish Karnad
Reviewer: MERCY. K
M.A. English Literature – I Year Student

As part of the library initiative to promote reading habits and critical thinking among students, a book review on Nagamandala by Girish Karnad was presented by an M.A. English Literature First Year student. Nagamandala is a significant play in Indian English literature that blends folklore, myth, and social reality.

The reviewer highlighted that the play is based on two folk tales from Karnataka and explores themes such as patriarchy, female identity, suppression, power, and transformation. The character of Rani was critically analysed, showing how her journey reflects the struggle of women in a male-dominated society. The symbolic presence of the cobra (Naga) and its role in redefining love and fidelity were also discussed in detail.

The student emphasised Girish Karnad’s effective use of myth and magic realism to question traditional social norms. The narrative technique, dramatic structure, and strong symbolism were appreciated for making the play both engaging and thought-provoking.

The book review session encouraged literary analysis, interpretation, and discussion among students. It helped participants gain a deeper understanding of Indian drama and feminist perspectives in literature. The programme successfully enhanced students’ analytical skills and fostered an interest in reading classical and contemporary literary works.
